The Baoshan Museum broke ground on February 1, 1999. At the end of September of that year, it was completed on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The building replicates the Ancient Chinese Southern Bronze Drum. The exterior is decorated with four large relief sculptures, such as “Kowloon Legend”, “The Double Rainbow Bridge”, “Yongchang Elephant Farm” and “Forces of Nujiang”, whereby reflecting the history and culture of Baoshan. The whole building has a height of 19.6 meters, a maximum diameter of 56.6 meters, a total construction area of 3,224m², and a total infrastructure investment of 5.7 million yuan.
The museum has a total of 7 exhibition halls with a total length of more than 400 meters. The exhibition contents are divided into eight major topics of "Prehistoric culture", "Ailao culture", "Yongchang culture", "Battle of Northern Burma and Western Yunnan", "People of the past", "National culture", "Fifty years of independence achievements" and "Natural resources". A total of 663 pieces (sets) of cultural relics and natural specimens, 762 pieces of informative posters and 58 graphic diagrams were used in the whole exhibition. In the form of a combination of pictures and cultural relics, Baoshan's history of social development and its rich natural and human resources dating back to tens of thousands of years since the late Paleolithic period are comprehensively and systematically displayed.
