In home renovation, details make or break the outcome—and tile installation is a key part of that. Many people overlook this step, leading to issues like hollow tiles, detachment, or a lack of aesthetic appeal. Today, we’re sharing some essential tips to keep in mind before laying tiles, helping you steer clear of costly mistakes. Save this post just in case!

Step 1: Follow the Tiling Plan Precisely
When you purchase tiles, the seller usually provides a layout plan based on your home's dimensions. This plan is crucial—it helps you precisely place each tile, reduces waste, and ensures a more polished final look. Following the layout not only standardizes the tiling process but also enhances the overall aesthetic of your renovation.

Step 2: Make Good Use of Tile Offcuts
Don’t waste tile scraps! Use offcuts in less noticeable areas, like corners or under cabinets. This minimizes waste and ensures that full, uncut tiles are used in prominent spots, maintaining a seamless appearance.

Step 3: Control Tile Spacing
Large tiles are increasingly popular, and many opt for tight or micro gaps to make the grout lines less noticeable. In southern regions, joints smaller than 1mm are suitable for a smoother effect. However, in northern areas where temperature fluctuations are greater, tighter joints can lead to issues—so a 2mm gap with proper grout is recommended.

Step 4: Level the Surface Before Tiling
No matter the tile size, surface leveling is a must. Uneven walls or floors will affect grout application later, resulting in poor finish or even detachment. Proper leveling ensures a solid, long-lasting installation.

Step 5: Waterproofing & Wall Surface Treatment
For bathrooms or balconies, waterproofing is essential. Before installing wall tiles, apply a rough base treatment by mixing concrete interface agent with cement mortar. This helps the tiles adhere firmly and maintains the effectiveness of the waterproofing.

Step 6: A Better Alternative to Corner Strips
Many people use corner strips (bullnose trims), but they’re not ideal—they can be unattractive, prone to breaking, and may have noticeable color differences. A better option is a mitered corner or “seagull corner” (cut at a 45° angle), which is both aesthetically pleasing and durable.

Step 7: Choosing & Installing Floor Drains
Floor drains are vital in areas like bathrooms and balconies. Choose ones that allow smooth drainage. The classic square drain pattern works well. Though spiral designs may look fancy, they don’t improve drainage and require more grouting, increasing labor and cost.
